Water Softener vs. Salt-Free Conditioner
Compare ion exchange with template-assisted conditioning.
Hardness removal or scale management?
Ion exchange removes hardness minerals and needs regeneration, salt or potassium and a suitable drain. Salt-free conditioning leaves minerals in the water and uses a different scale-management process. Compare the result you want rather than treating the terms as synonyms.
If reduced hardness is the measurable goal, compare a conventional softener. If avoiding brine is a priority, examine the conditioner manufacturer limits and evidence for the exact feed conditions. Neither system is a universal drinking-water filter, and neither should be presented as solving every water concern.
